Welcome to HotelGuide.Networks' directory of hotels and hotel reviews for Barcelona, Spain!

Famed as the port from which Christopher Columbus set sail for the Americas, Barcelona -- capital of Catalonia -- rivals inland Madrid as the industrial and business apex of Spain. Major upgrades stemming from the 1992 Summer Olympics paved the way for seaside Barcelona to take on even more modern identity, and shoreline re-nourishment has popularized its beaches as urban landscape leisure magnets. Catalan Art Nouveau buildings are eye-popping, especially works by modernist architect Antonio Gaudi whose La Sagrada Familia Church attracts attention with flamboyant spires, stained glass windows and sculpture. Among more than 50 museums of Barcelona yielding priceless heritage are the Museo Picasso with an important collection of the painter's work and the Fundacion Joan Miro. The Museum of Modern Art and the palatial Museu d'Art de Catalunya contain masterpieces by El Greco, Dali and other renowned painters who once called Barcelona home. Within the city's oldest section is the Barri Gotic or Gothic Quarter, a famed historic district filled with narrow streets and landmark buildings that trace the city's medieval past. Most notable are the Gothic Cathedral with its twin towers, the centuries-old City Hall (Ajuntament), and the elegant 15th Century Palace of the Generals, or Palau de la Generalitat. Shows, bars, discotheques, concerts, and popular fiestas are among favored Barcelona entertainment choices, especially in Las Ramblas, the city's popular shopping and entertainment center. Catalonian delicacies such as tapas and habras a la Catalina (a spicy bean stew) go well with fine wines of the region. The Greater Barcelona area offers the full range of lodging options, from contemporary hotels in the metropolitan areas to intimate bed and breakfast inns throughout the countryside.
